Madame Royale will you take the scousers to church?! – ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey guys!!! Welcome back to MikeyMix!! As a few of you may recall, a couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of attending the Aja and Farrah Moan gig that was held at the ‘KLUBLAND’ Bar in Blackpool, UK.

Since I attended this gig (and had an excellent time, it’s safe to say the girls definitely delivered!), the kind people over at ‘KLUBKIDS UK’ (a company which specialises in bringing the drag artists of America to the UK) have invited me to the Latrice Royale gig at ‘Heaven Nightclub’, for those unaware ‘Heaven’ is an immensely popular nightclub in my hometown of Liverpool.

latrice

For those who aren’t fans of drag race; Latrice Royale, is an all time fan favourite having won over our hearts on season four of the hit show (unfortunately she didn’t win but that didn’t stop her from going on to have an excellent career!) and was invited to compete again in the first season of Drag Race spin-off ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars’ in which she and drag race alumni Manila Luzon competed together following the “double-up” twist.

Latrice will be appearing in ‘Heaven Nightclub’ on Sunday August 20 and tickets (whilst still available) can be purchased by visiting the following link: TICKETS HERE

Show Times:

After the show I will upload a vlog of my experience onto my YouTube channel (MikeyMixTV) if you haven’t subscribed already be sure to as this vlog (which will include an interview with Royale herself is not to be missed!!).

The gig is definitely going to be amazing as Latrice Royale is one hell of a performer and knows what the fans want: if I can get her to say the iconic line, “get those nuts away from my face” on camera I will die happy!! Hope to see some of you there, until next time: stay safe, be happy and keep on jammin!

Halsey: “Now Or Never” – REVIEW

Good evening readers, welcome back to MikeyMix! As promised in my post from earlier today (the premiere of my journalistic video piece on reality television, which can be found here), tonight’s blog post is going to be a review on ‘Now Or Never’ the new single by Halsey.

‘Now Or Never’ is the lead single from Halsey‘s upcoming second album, entitled ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’. As well as releasing the track, Halsey opted to release the official music video for the song alongside it.

The music video takes place in a grungy, modern dystopia in which (if my initial reaction is correct) Halsey is involved in a cult and is confused in love. It has to be said that throughout the video Halsey remains distinct in this white-washed world as she is rocking gorgeous blue hair, the look as a whole gives me some serious ‘Judas’ by Lady Gaga

The track as a whole sounds different to the stuff Halsey has released in the past and I honestly love it: the simple lyrics are immediately catchy and although she sounds a little bit robotic, it’s not overused meaning that the track remains a pleasuring experience for the listeners.

I will be rating this track a 5 out of 5 star rating, mainly because I love this song and was pleasantly surprised. I am very excited to hear the rest of the album and expect great things from Halsey.

‘Now Or Never’ is available for purchase on iTunes and is available for streaming on all music streaming platforms: Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal.

Until next time: stay safe, be happy and keep on jamming!!

Artist of The Week: Week 2

Good evening readers, welcome to MikeyMix! This evening’s blog post will mark the return of a series that I almost retired: the “Artist of The Week” series.

This blog post will be dedicated to the latest recipient of the title: Cody Vavrik. I only discovered the music of Vavrik very recently but I have to say that one thing is clear, he has talent.

One thing that I immediately picked up on was his very distinct image, if I had to describe it I’d say: Miley Cyrus meets Natalia Kills with a dash of Lady Gaga and a sprinkle of Years and Years for added likability.

Vavrik‘s music style cannot be put into one box and that in my opinion is definitely a good thing. His two most popular tracks ‘F*CK YOU WANT’ and ‘Now You Know’ both showcase great genre versatility by combining electro-pop with soul to create a pleasant (almost psychedelic) experience for the listener.

His music videos are definitely something I haven’t seen before: being a devote Lady Gaga fan that is something that I don’t get to say often. His music video styles can easily be described as an acid trip in which we somehow ended up in a Japanese sex party.

Vavrik is definitely an artist to watch and a must listen if your a fan of musicians that aren’t afraid to think outside the box and experiment with styles.

I will embed the official music video for Vavrik‘s track ‘Now You Know’ below so do feel free to give it a watch.

Charli XCX – “Number 1 Angel” – REVIEW

Good afternoon readers! Welcome back to MikeyMix, earlier this morning alternative-pop princess Charli XCX released her third studio album (or mixtape as it has been advertised) ‘Number 1 Angel’.

This is XCX‘s first release of 2017 following the release of her 2016 single ‘After The Party’ and her 2016 EP ‘Vroom Vroom’.

I feel like the ‘Vroom Vroom’ EP was a teaser of XCX‘s new sound as this album definitely gives me some ‘Vroom Vroom’ vibes.

The ten track album sounds fresh yet familiar and XCX has opted to collaborate with fellow alternative artists on a number of tracks.

The track listing for the project is as follows:

  1. Dreamer [feat. Starrah & RAYE]
  2. 3AM (Pull Up) [feat. MØ]
  3. Blame It On You
  4. Roll With Me
  5. Emotional
  6. ILY2
  7. White Roses
  8. Babygirl [feat. Uffie]
  9. Drugs [feat. Abra]
  10. Lipgloss [feat. CupcakKe]

I love that the majority of artists that XCX has chosen to work with are alternative rap artists as I believe they bring a diverse sound to the tracks in which they are on.

The mix of rap and pop within the album is an excellent mix and the track list compliments each other so that, when played in full: the album sounds like a story of a girl who deals with a breakup, goes to the club and forgets about her past lover with a mix of sex and drugs.

I honestly cannot pick a favourite track on this album and my critiques are non existent as she has catered to my every need with this album. However if I did have to list my favourite tracks from the album they would be (in no particular order):

  • Dreamer [feat. Starrah & RAYE]
  • 3AM (Pull Up) [feat. MØ]
  • Blame It On You
  • Emotional
  • White Roses
  • Drugs [feat. Abra]
  • Lipgloss [feat. CupcakKe]

Overall I will be giving this album a 5 out of 5 star rating as I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album and have had it on repeat all morning.

Until next time: stay safe, be happy and keep on jamming!!

Lorde: “Green Light” – REVIEW

Good evening readers, welcome back to MikeyMix! Minutes ago teen-queen of alternative music Lorde released the first track ‘Green Light’ from her highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Melodrama’.

I haven’t been this excited for a track release since Lady Gaga released ‘Perfect Illusion’ back in August so the minute the clock struck 7 (UK time) I quickly opened up Apple Music and played the track as soon as I can.

As promised the 3 minute 54 second track is different to anything Lorde has ever released and this risk has definitely worked in her favour!

Everything about this track is perfect in my opinion: the beat sounds fresh and has a good balance of fast and slow, the lyrics are clever (in true Lorde fashion) and the voice acts as the icing on the cake and truly compliments the beat and lyrics.

Although it’s only been released for about fifteen minutes I’ve had this song on repeat as I am enjoying it so much, the song was definitely worth the wait and I am so excited to see what this new era brings as if this song is anything to go by it’s going to be good!

I’ll be giving this track a 5 out of 5 star rating as the minute it began I fell in love and can tell I will be listening to it non-stop for the next few days.

The track is available for purchase on iTunes and is available for streaming on all streaming sites: Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal.

The music video for the track was also released at the same time as the song and can be found below:

Lana Del Rey: “Love” – REVIEW

Good afternoon readers! Welcome to MikeyMix, on February 18th the queen of alternative music Lana Del Rey released the track ‘Love’ from her upcoming (yet to be named) fifth studio album.

The 4 minute 39 second track is Lana‘s first release since her 2015 single ‘Music to Watch Boys To’ from her album ‘Honeymoon’

Alike all of many of Lana‘s releases the track combines soft beats with an even softer voice, the voice alone perfectly highlights the message of the track: throughout the track Lana is reflecting on the concept of “youth” taking the experiences provided by her fans as inspiration.

Upon first listen I wasn’t the biggest fan of the track, however after giving it a second listen I immediately fell in love. If I had to compare this track to anything I would say that it reminds me of a slower version of Lana‘s track ‘National Anthem’ if it had been released during the ‘Ultraviolence’ era.

I will be giving this track a 4 out of 5 star rating as I highly enjoyed it and it is definitely one of my new Lana songs. However, I did find some parts of the track to be quite repetitive.

Until next time: stay safe, be happy and keep on jamming!!
