Good evening everyone, welcome back to MikeyMix! Today I am bringing you two blog posts the first of which was a review of ‘Number 1 Angel’, the new album by Charli XCX which can be found here.
Earlier today current queen of modern rap/RnB/hip-hop Nicki Minaj surprised fans by releasing three new singles from her upcoming, yet to be named fourth studio album.
The tracks released today are as follows:
Regret In Your Tears
‘Regret In Your Tears’ is a 3 minute 50 second track and the only solo track Minaj opted to release today. The soft beat combined with the equally soft vocals provided by Minaj (as opposed to the usual harsh rap bars that we are used to) make the song a pleasuring listening experience.
However if I was Minaj I wouldn’t have chosen to release this song as one of the main singles of the new album as the track is quite boring compared to the music we are used to hearing from Minaj.
That being said, the song did remind me a lot of Minaj‘s previous releases ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Save Me’ and it was nice to see her once again showcase her vocal abilities as she definitely can sing.
Changed It (feat. Lil Wayne)
‘Changed It’ is a 4 minute 56 second track and the first of two tracks which feature Lil Wayne. One thing that I did love about this track was the distinct beat as it definitely complimented that bars greatly.
However I do have to say that I feel Lil Wayne did steal the show on this track and if someone didn’t know any better they could easily mistake this track as “Lil Wayne feat. Nicki Minaj” track.
I also believe this track is a little too long and the whole vibe of it can get quite tedious and on several occasions I did zone out and found myself just waiting for it to be over.
No Frauds (feat. Drake & Lil Wayne)
‘No Frauds’ is arguably the strongest of all the tracks released today: with a length of 4 minute and 32 seconds and two collaborations from two respected rappers ‘No Fraud’ is a great track.
The beat (which sounds a little like the beat for ‘Changed it’ or the early track ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’ by Kendrick Lamar) isn’t too harsh and works well with the bars provided by the three veteran rappers of the “Young Money” record label.
I feel like this track really showcased a good mixture of the old Minaj and her maturer sound from her third studio ‘The Pinkprint’ and it definitely worked because the element of familiarity is bound to go down well with the general public.
Overall: my favourite track has to be ‘No Frauds’ as the song is good, an easy listen with strong lyrics that become cleverer with every listen.
I am very excited to see what this new era brings for Minaj and if these tracks are anything to go by I expect that it’ll be good: maybe not every track she’s going to release is going to be my cup of tea but as not the biggest fan of rap I expected this to be the case.
